SOPHOMORE CHECKLIST

Welcome to sophomore year, a year during which you will likely solidify your interests and will begin digging into them deeper and more intentionally. . Enjoy this year, and use the time to continue beefing up your application with activities, honors and good grades.

✔ GRADES, GRADES, & GRADES

Just as important as your freshman grades, your sophomore year will make up the second third of your GPA which will be sent to colleges.  This is because you apply to college in the fall of your senior year, and they mainly evaluate your grades from the first three years in high school.

✔ LEARN ABOUT GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Ms. Frankwick gives an annual presentation for freshmen and sophomores about courses offered at NYHS, WA State graduation requirements, and expectations universities have.  It’s a good idea to search online to learn what your favorite colleges require for admission to particular majors. Work with Ms. Frankwick and your faculty advisor to plan courses which will keep you on track for graduation, provide an appropriate challenge for you, and allow you to explore your interests.

✔ EXTRACURRICULARS

Stay involved with your activities and take advantage of opportunities for leadership roles. You still have time to get involved in clubs at school, find activities in your local community, volunteer, or do part-time work.

✔ HONORS & AWARDS

Keep a list of honors and awards you have received since your freshman year; this way when you get ready to apply for college, you won’t forget any.  You’ll have everything in one spot.

✔ USE YOUR SUMMER

Use your time off over the summer break to find ways to volunteer and build your credentials. Check with Ms. Frankwick for help finding summer programs, and volunteer or internship possibilities.
